Western United boss John Aloisi is in the mix to become the next full-time coach of the Matildas, 7NEWS understands.

The Socceroos champion is out of contract at his A-League club at the end of this season, but faces stiff competition from European-based Aussie, Joe Montemurro, who is the favourite to land the national gig.

Former coach Tony Gustavsson’s four-year tenure with the Matildas finished after their early exit at the Paris Olympics, with both parties agreeing mutually to part ways.

That was all the way back in August last year, with Tom Sermanni having taken over in an interim capacity since then.

More than eight months later, there is growing frustration among the Matildas squad, particularly from those on the fringe, with the lack of direction.

Players like defender Matilda McNamara, who has played one game for the national team, are desperate to know where they stand and why they are being left out.

“Seeing the direction that the coach wants is really important, so hopefully they’ve done their homework to getting the right person for the job,” The Adelaide United star told 7NEWS.

“(Not having a full-time coach) definitely makes it hard as a player to know what they’re looking for and what they want.”

Regardless, the 26-year-old is proud of what she’s achieved in her career to date.

“Knowing that I gave everything to be the best I could, whether that translates to being a regular Matilda or not is, in my opinion, not so much up to me, it’s up to them and who they want to pick for those teams,” McNamara said.

“So, I’ll keep finding reasons to be very proud of myself.”

If Aloisi doesn’t get the nod for the Matildas job, he could be lured home to Adelaide to coach the Reds, if the contract of incumbent coach Carl Veart isn’t extended.

Reds skipper Ryan Kitto says his side is just trying to focus on what happens on the pitch.

“There is a little bit of outside noise and a few distractions at the moment, but our full focus is on the training ground and on the games ahead,” he told 7NEWS.
