Queensland Police have confirmed they have charged former Brisbane Broncos champion Josh McGuire for two alleged incidents against a five-year-old.

McGuire, 35, is facing a charge of common assault after allegedly strangling a child.

McGuire, who had a decorated career in the NRL, was taken to Brisbane Watchhouse on Tuesday.

The two charges have come after an investigation by the Gateway Child Protection and Investigation Unit.

McGuire had stints at the Cowboys and St George Illawarra Dragons after playing 197 games for the Broncos.

He also represented Australia and was part of the victorious World Cup team in 2017.

He also featured for Queensland in State of Origin on 14 occasions.

His time in the NRL ended in 2022 and he then played for the Warrington Wolves in England’s Super League.

He was back at the Broncos last year in a coaching capacity, working as an adviser of contact and wrestling.

He has been an ambassador for Ronald McDonald House and also for Mates4Mates (who provide mental health support, among other things, for Defence Force veterans).

He is now expected to appear at the Magistrates Court in Brisbane a week before Christmas.
