Storm star Jahrome Hughes’ season appears over after he broke his wrist in his return match from injury tonight.

Hughes, the reigning Dally M Medal winner, took to the field for Melbourne in their final round game against Brisbane after missing the last five games with a dislocated shoulder.

But midway through the first half he was hurt while trying to tackle Broncos forward Brendan Piakura.

WATCH BELOW: THE MOMENT HUGHES KNEW HE WAS HURT BADLY

Hughes tried to shake off the pain and orchestrate a Storm attacking raid but fell to the ground in agony.

He then started clutching his left arm and was quickly taken off, replaced by Tyran Wishart.

If the injury is as bad as first feared, Hughes’ NRL finals campaign is over before it even began, which will be a massive blow to the Storm’s chances of returning to the grand final after their loss to Penrith in last year’s decider.

To make matters worse Storm prop Nelson Asofa-Solomona was put on report and sin-binned for a high shot on Ben Talty.

The Broncos were all over an ill-disciplined Melbourne early to take a 2-0 lead. The home side’s defence, with No.6 Billy Walters notable, was on song.

Broncos fullback Reece Walsh opened the scoring after putting Payne Haas in a gap and supporting. The Bunker ruled the pass from Haas came of Walsh’s knee and overturned the on-field decision.

Storm second-rower Eliesa Katoa scored off a Cameron Munster bomb but Walsh found back-rower Brendan Piakura on the short side to extend the Broncos’ lead to 12-4 at halftime.

Both teams were down to 12 men in the first half with Broncos winger Deine Mariner binned for repeated ruck infringements.

Brisbane went on to win 30-14.
