Australian Kathryn Mitchell has started in the women’s javelin throw final, with her first throw a season best 62.63m effort which has her in third.
Mackenzie Little has settled in sixth with a 60.32m opening salvo.
Photo finish in hurdles final
American Masai Russell won the gold medal in the women’s 100m hurdles in a photo finish.
But far and away the loudest cheer was for hometown hero Cyréna Samba-Mayela, who was overcome with emotion as soon as her silver medal was confirmed.

Alice Williams finished the Olympic women’s water polo tournament’s leading goalscorer but has heaped all the praise on her teammates.
“I score the goals they set up ... it’s a testament to their work ethic and their support in the pool,” she told Channel Nine.
Gold for Kenya in men’s 800m
Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi held off Canada’s Marco Arop to win the men’s 800m gold medal.
The favourite, Djamel Sedjati of Algeria, closed hard to win bronze after starting the second lap in last but ran out of steam late.

Aussies miss out in madison
Australian pair Sam Welsford and Kelland O’Brien finished the track cycling men’s madison final in 13th place, sinking down the leaderboard after a late points penalty.
Portugal came from the clouds late to win their first ever track cycling gold medal, ahead of Italy and Denmark.
