Racing legend Allan Moffat dead aged 83 after Alzheimer's battle

Racing legend Allan Moffat has died aged 86 after a “long and courageous” battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
The four-time Australian Touring Car Champion and four-time Bathurst winner died surrounded by loved ones shortly after 11am on Saturday.
Born in Canada, Moffat was best-known for his success on Mount Panorama throughout the ‘70s, and was an inductee of the Supercar and Australian Sports Hall of Fame.

In a statement from his family, Moffat was remembered as “not only one of Australia’s most successful and admired motor racing drivers, but a towering figure whose influence shaped the nation’s motorsport identity for more than five decades.
“Allan Moffat leaves behind an extraordinary legacy, not only as a champion driver, but as a respected mentor, advocate, and friend to many.
“He will be remembered for his unwavering passion, competitive spirit, and the profound impact he had on motorsport in Australia and around the world.”
Moffat claimed victory at the Bathurst 1000 in 1970, 1973, and 1977.
He also won the Australian Touring Car Championships in 1973, 1976, 1977, and 1983.
Supercars Australia will honour Moffat at the upcoming bp Adelaide Grand Final.

Supercars Chief Executive James Warburton said Moffat was a “pioneer, a champion and an icon whose impact on our sport is impossible to measure.
“He brought a new level of professionalism to the sport, transforming the role of sponsorship and team management in ways that shaped the modern era of Supercars.
“His influence can still be felt in the paddock today.”

Moffat was a Patron of Demenita Australia and helped found the Allan Moffat Foundation, which will continue following his death.
He was also recipient of the Order of the British Empire.
