Soccer: The Matildas are back in action in Perth, with the hosts of the Women’s Asian Cup set to open the tournament against the Philippines at Optus Stadium.

After a barnstorming run to a fourth-placed finish at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, one of the country’s most beloved sporting teams will be hoping to go two wins better and hoist the Asian Cup for the first time since 2010.

WA product and the side’s superstar captain Sam Kerr declared herself “85 per cent” fit yesterday and will be hoping to find the back of the net for the national side for the first time in more than two years.

Rare Philippines attack

The Philippines have just made a rare entry into their own half - but it came from a clearance which was quickly recovered by the Matildas.

Australia are pressing hard for a second goal.

Matildas dominant

The Matildas have been dominant in the first 20-plus minutes of this game, but are still searching for a second goal.

They appear to be trying to exploit an aerial advantage over the visitors, with several of their best chances coming from crosses.

Matildas come alive

The opening goal has looked to spark the Matildas to life.

The hosts looked a little disjointed in the early exchanges but are now playing at an intense rhythm which will please coach Joe Montemurro.

Emily Van Egmond had a great chance to double the Matildas’ advantage on the back of a brilliant cross from Hayley Raso, but put her header over the bar.

Kerr scores!

It has not taken long for Sam Kerr to find the back of the net!

The Matildas captain was all too happy to capitalise on a brilliant delivery from Clare Wheeler, heading home from close range to give her side the lead.

That will settle any early nerves among the crowd!

Early chance

The Matildas’ best chance of the game has again come from a set piece, with Steph Catley causing problems.

Winonah Heatley came up with a low driven shot from the edge of the box, but the Philippines were able to clear.

Confident claim

Perhaps the game’s loudest cheer has come from Matildas goalkeeper Chloe Lincoln claiming a long Philippines free kick into the box.

Lincoln is lining up in place of Mackenzie Arnold.

Disjointed start

Ellie Carpenter made one of her trademark marauding runs forward, but collided with winger Hayley Raso to bring an end to the attack.

Raso stayed down for a moment but is now back on her feet.

Kerr in the action

Caitlin Foord tried to play in Sam Kerr, but had the attempt blocked out of bounds for a corner.

Steph Catley swung the ball in and the Philippines were eventually able to get the ball clear amid some chaos in the box.

Early exchanges

Both team’s early attacks have not come to much, with the Philippines’ Chandler McDaniel’s audcacious attempt to lob Chloe Lincoln from beyond the halfway line comfortably claimed by the Matildas goalkeeper.
