The 34-year-old was arrested.
Mr Spitzer said the man’s wife and children were not harmed in the incident.
“Violence is never the answer, and it is truly heartbreaking that these young children had to witness their father commit such a horrific act of brutality in their own home,” he said.
Pinedalopez was charged with one count of murder and one count of enhancement of personal use of a weapon.
The maximum penalty for the alleged crimes is 26 years in prison.
Dramatic footage, published by The California Post, of Pinedalopez of being walked out of the house into a police vehicle.
Next-door neighbour Elizabeth Polanco told the outlet that she heard police yell “get out” around 4.15am.
She said they were “nice people” and said the man was “never upset”.
“This is terrible. I never imagined there would be anything scandalous like this,” Ms Polanco said.
Pinedalopez is expected to appear in court on December 1.
