An Adelaide family is devastated to learn a stranger has been placed in their family's crypt.

Employees at a Florida thrift store thought they were dealing with the usual stream of donated clothes, household goods and forgotten treasures. Instead, they stumbled across a discovery so unusual it prompted a visit from police.

Staff at Jericho Ministries Thrift Store in Brooksville were sorting through a batch of donations dropped off on May 16 when they came across what appeared to be a human skull hidden among the items.

One employee, Jared Veals, immediately suspected the remains were genuine.

“I could tell by seeing where the upper mantles met,” Mr Veals told The Hernando Sun.

Authorities were called to investigate the grim find, with Hernando County Sheriff’s Office Corporal Michael Terry later saying the skull appeared to date back to the World War II era.

While the discovery initially raised alarm, investigators do not believe there is any criminal element involved.

Instead, police suspect the skull may have been unknowingly donated as part of a collection or family estate.

“We just want to ensure the people who donated realised it was a real skull, not a prop,” Corporal Terry told the outlet.

“(We’re) thinking it might have been passed down by a family member.”

Investigators are still hoping to speak with the person who dropped off the donation to determine how the remains ended up at the store.

The strange discovery has left both staff and authorities searching for answers, transforming what began as a routine donation drop-off into a mystery that has captured local attention.

For now, the skull remains in the custody of authorities as efforts continue to trace its origins and identify how it found its way into a thrift store donation pile.
