The Gaza ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas has gone into effect, the Israeli military says.

It went into effect at midday, local time (8pm AEDT) on Friday.

“Since 1200, IDF troops began positioning themselves along the updated deployment lines in preparation for the ceasefire agreement and the return of hostages”, the Israeli military said.

The announcement came after Palestinians reported heavy shelling on Friday morning in Gaza, hours after Israel’s cabinet approved US President Donald Trump’s plan for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the release of the remaining hostages and of Palestinian prisoners.

The approval marked a key step towards ending a ruinous two-year war that has destabilised the Middle East.

A brief statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office early on Friday said the cabinet approved the “outline” of a deal to release the hostages, without mentioning other aspects of the plan that are more controversial.

Netanyahu’s office said he would made a media statement shortly.
