Israel launches fresh strikes in Iran, hitting holy city overnight
The Israeli Air Force “struck and dismantled” a ballistic missile launcher which they claim was armed and “ready to fire at Israel”, according to a statement from the IDF.
The central city of Isfahan was also hit in the strikes, which took out an aerial defense system, the statement said.
Aussie involvement in deadly torpedo strike unknown
The Foreign Minister is refusing to say whether Australian personnel were on board a US submarine which sank an Iranian warship overnight, insisting the government does not discuss deployments for “operational and security reasons”.
Penny Wong has faced sustained questioning in Parliament over whether Australia is providing any assistance to the war against Iran, including this week’s revelations in The Nightly about the visit of two US surveillance aircraft to an airbase outside Perth.
During Question Time Greens Senator David Shoebridge asked Senator Wong about Wednesday’s deadly torpedo strike on Iran’s Iris Dena frigate by a US submarine operating in international waters off the coast of Sri Lanka.
“The most recent data from the government said there were between 50 to 100 Australian personnel currently embedded on US nuclear powered attack submarines in the region,” Senator Shoebridge told Parliament.
“Were any Australian personnel on this US submarine when it sank the Iranian frigate and left the survivors to drown?” the Greens Senator then demanded to know.
Senator Wong initially responded that “US submarine operations are a matter for the United States” but then clarified that the government could not publicly confirm or deny whether Royal Australian Navy personnel were involved.
“As I have told you before in a number of other contexts, for operational and security reasons, we don’t disclose specific information regarding Australian personnel,” Senator Wong said.
Hamas official killed in Israeli strike: Report
According to Lebanon’s National News Agency, an Israeli strike on a Palestinian refugee camp near Tripoli has killed a Hamas official.
The NNA reports that Wassim Atallah al-Ali and his wife were killed when a “enemy drone targeted their home” in Beddawi.
The man is believed to be a senior Hamas official.
The pre-dawn strike marked the northernmost strike in Lebanon so far.
Crisis teams part of effort to help stranded Aussies
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed “military assets” have been deployed to the Middle East to assist stranded Australians
During Question Time, the PM said the Government is “deploying six crisis response teams to the region” and had “already deployed military assets as part of contingency planning earlier this week”.
“I thank those Australians who are going into a dangerous situation in order to help their fellow Australians caught up in this conflict.”
There are more than 115,000 Australians stranded in the region according to DFAT estimates.
Doha evacuates residents near US embassy
Qatar is evacuating residents near its US embassy in Doha as a “precautionary” measure, according to the ministry of interior.
“In the framework of maintaining public safety, the Ministry of Interior announces that the relevant authorities are evacuating residents living in the vicinity of the U.S. Embassy as a temporary precautionary measure,” it said in a statement on X.
Many US citizens are attempting to flee the region, barred by the suspension and cancellation of commerical flights.
Base used by US forces in Baghdad reportedly struck
Iran has reportedly struck a military base near Baghdad International Airport in Iraq, a site used by US forces in the Middle East.
The US has not yet commented on the latest strike. The base has been targeted multiple times in recent days.
US military personnel are often housed at the base, which provides logistical support to armed forces across the Middle East.
Multiple but unconfirmed reports have suggested that US forces had been sent to the base in recent hours.
Iran reportedly targets Kurdistan region as ground incursion reported
Iranian state TV has reported that the IRGC is conducting strikes on “anti-Iran separatist forces in the Kurdistan of Iraq after reports emerged that Kurdish fighters, armed by the US, had begun a ground incursion”.
Strikes have been reported in Northern Iraq, reportedly targeting the headquarters of Kurdish armed groups.
Fresh strikes in Iran’s west near Iraqi border
Multiple explosions have been reported in Sanandaj, Iran, from a suspected US strike on Iranian state broadcasting services.
Sanandaj, a city in Iran’s west with a population of 850,000, is located near the reported location of US and Israeli armed Kurdish militants who have commenced a ground incursion operation from the Iraqi border.
It is understood that the strikes targeted a radio station.
Video quickly emerged of the strike on social media, showing the strikes hitting an already burning building.
Five Eyes Alliance still ‘continuing to function very well’
When asked if the Five Eyes Alliance is still a viable operating model or if it requires modernising, Mark Carney said it was still “continuing to function very well”.
“There are many challenges, but there are many things that continue to function very well, and the Five Eyes would be top of that,” Mr Carney said.
The Five Eyes Alliance is an intelligence-sharing relationship between Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the US and the UK.
Carney says Canada could be pulled into Iran war
Canadian PM Mark Carney says “one can never categorically rule out participation” when asked about the conflict in the Middle East.
Speaking in Australia during his three-day tour Downunder, the PM declared Canda would “always stand by and defend our allies” but was clear to label the strikes on Iran as an “offensive” action by the US and Israel.
“One can never categorically rule out participation. We will stand by our allies,” he said.
“But it makes sense there’s a distinction between the offensive actions that were taken and are being taken by the United States and Israel, that were taken by them without consultation with Canada, with other with other allies.
“We will always defend Canadians. We will always stand by and defend our allies when called upon.”
