Middle East conflict: What’s the latest?
If you’re just joining us, welcome to our rolling coverage of the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
Here’s a quick snapshot of the key developments:
- Australia has ruled out sending a warship to the region after US President Donald Trump urged allied nations to help form a multinational naval force to protect oil tankers travelling through the Strait of Hormuz.
- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also pushed back against rumours circulating online that he had died, posting a video of himself buying coffee and joking he was “dead crazy” for “coffee”.
- Meanwhile, five members of Iran’s women’s national football team have now withdrawn their asylum bids in Australia, reversing earlier decisions to remain in the country.
Australian shares fall as war enters third week
The Australian share market is down and falling as the Israel-US-Iran war lumbers into its 16th day.
The S&P/ASX 200 dropped 33.7 points — .39 per cent — to 8583.4 at close on Monday.

‘Selected’ flights resume from Dubai Airport after drone strike
The Dubai Civil Aviation Authority says “some flights” from Dubai International Airport have resumed following a drone strike early on Monday morning.
“Dubai Civil Aviation Authority announces the gradual resumption of some flights to and from Dubai International Airport to selected destinations, following the temporary suspension implemented as a precautionary measure,” the Dubai Media Office said in a statement.
“Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for the latest updates regarding their flights.”
Earlier on Monday, an Emirates flight from Melbourne was diverted to Dubai World Central airport, about an hour from Dubai International, after the latter attacked by a drone.
Australia snubs Trump’s plea for warships to protect Hormuz
The Australian Defence Force will not deploy a warship to the Strait of Hormuz despite Donald Trump ramping up pressure on allies to help protect the crucial shipping lane, as the Albanese Government insists it’s yet to receive any specific request for support from Washington.
More than a fortnight after Israel and the United States launched attacks against Iran, President Trump is warning the NATO military alliance faces a “very bad” future if member nations fail to step up.
On Monday, Transport Minister Catherine King confirmed the government would not deploy a warship to the conflict zone after last week announcing a Royal Australian Air Force E-7A surveillance plane was being sent to help defend the United Arab Emirates.
“We’ve been very clear about what our contribution is in relation to requests, and so far, that is to the UAE — obviously providing aircraft to assist with defence, particularly given the number of Australians that are in that area in particular,” Ms King said.
“But we won’t be sending a ship to the Strait of Hormuz. We know how incredibly important that is. That’s not something that we’ve been asked, or we’re contributing,” she told the ABC.
Drones intercepted over Saudi Arabian capital
The Saudi Arabian defense ministry is reporting drones have been intercepted and destroyed over the capital city of Riyadh, and in the country’s east.
The interception comes after Saudi Arabia was peppered with drone attacks on Sunday evening and Monday morning, with at least 60 interceptions reported.
IDF begin ground operations in Lebanon
The Israel Defence Force say it has begun “limited” operations on the ground in southern Lebanon, which it claims will be “targeted” towards Hezbollah strongholds.
“This activity is part of broader defensive efforts to establish and strengthen a forward defensive posture, which includes the dismantling of terrorist infrastructure and the elimination of terrorists operating in the area, to create an additional layer of security for residents of northern Israel,” an IDF statement said.
Emirates flight from Melbourne diverted after Dubai airport attack
An Emirates flight heading to Dubai International Airport from Melbourne has been diverted after the airport was closed following a drone attack.
Flight EK407 left Melbourne at 10.52pm local time last night, and was stuck in a holding pattern above the UAE’s west coast before being diverted to Dubai World Central in Jebel Ali.
Emirates say the airline is operating on a “limited schedule” and has cancelled several flights from Dubai after the attack on Monday morning.
US proposes coalition to protect Strait of Hormuz traffic
US President Donald Trump says his administration has been liaising with “about seven” countries, including China, to form a coalition to escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz, the BBC is reporting.
The President says countries who depend on the Strait for their oil transportation should “defend their own territory” — “where they get their energy”, he went on to explain.
“It’s only appropriate that people who are the beneficiaries of the Strait will help to make sure that nothing bad happens there,” he told the Financial Times.
Earlier today, Trump claimed it would be “very bad for the future of NATO” if the organisation’s members did not contribute to securing the Strait, which has been under attack from Iranian bombardment and naval mines since the war began.
Trump also says he “may delay” an upcoming summit with Xi Jinping due to the war.
UAE fighting missile threat after Dubai airport hit
UAE air defense systems are fighting a “missile threat”, the country’s National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority are reporting.
This come just hours after Dubai International Airport was hit by a drone strike earlier on Monday, sparking a fire at one of the airport’s fuel tanks.
Emirates airlines have cancelled several flights from Dubai since the strike, and will be operating on an “limited schedule” until further notice.
Saudi Arabia shoots down barrage of drone attacks
At least 60 drones have been intercepted over eastern Saudi Arabia overnight, the country’s defense ministry is reporting.
It is believed the drones were headed toward “major” oil infrastructure in the region.
No damage or casualties have been reported.
Dubai International Airport flights halted after drone strike
Flights at Dubai International Airport have been temporarily suspended after a drone strike sparked a large fire at one of the airfield’s fuel tanks.
Dubai’s Media Office confirmed on Monday that several flights were diverted to Al Maktoum International Airport while emergency crews worked to contain the blaze.
“A drone incident in the vicinity of Dubai International Airport (DXB) affected one of the fuel tanks … Dubai Civil Aviation Authority announces the temporary suspension of flights at Dubai International Airport as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of all passengers and staff,” the media office posted on X.
“Dubai Airports announces the diversion of some flights from Dubai International Airport (DXB) to Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC).”
Emirates airline also confirmed flights in and out of Dubai’s major international hub had been temporarily halted following the incident.
