Residents and tourists rattled by double explosion at Maltese fireworks factory

A massive explosion at a fireworks factory in Malta has shaken homes kilometres away from the blast site.

A huge explosion at a fireworks factory has rattled northern Malta.

Homes were shaken, glass windows shattered, and those in the vicinity could be seen fleeing in footage of the blast in Naxxar about 6.30am Monday local time.

There were no workers in the Lourdes Fireworks Factory at the time of the explosion, and no one was seriously injured.

Two men in nearby fields suffered minor injures and have been hospitalised.

They are being treated for shock, Sunrise reports.

A food courier also suffered minor injuries, and four cows were killed, The Times of Malta reports.

The explosion registered as a 1.9 magnitude blast, Sunrise reports.

Shocking footage of the two major blasts in quick succession were captured across the town, and images of debris and destruction have also begun to emerge.

The fireworks factory in Salina is in a rural and residential area, immediately surrounded by farmland, resorts, a bird park, and historic landmarks including temples and castles.

Tourists and locals alike were evacuated, as emergency services responded.
