King Charles III has sent a heartfelt message to Queenslanders affected by ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, praising the resilience and community spirit shown in the wake of the storm.

“Following our visit to Australia at the end of last year, my wife and I particularly wanted to say how much our thoughts are with all those who have been so severely affected by the destructive weather events along Australia’s East coast over the past two months,” King Charles said.

His message comes after Cyclone Alfred lashed Southeast Queensland, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and widespread flooding.

The storm caused significant damage, with thousands of homes and businesses impacted, roads inundated, and communities left without power.

The King expressed his admiration for the strength of Australians facing these challenges, noting: “Australians are, of course, only too accustomed to these calamities but, as always, we are hugely inspired by everyone’s indomitable good humour and community spirit.”

He also acknowledged the additional hardship for those still recovering from earlier disasters.

“The impact is still utterly devastating, and especially so for those people who have just recovered, or are indeed still recovering, from yet another recent natural disaster.”

King Charles praised the kindness and courage of Australians, qualities that have stood out to him since his first visit nearly sixty years ago, he wrote.

He thanked the police, emergency services, military personnel, and volunteers for their tireless efforts in response to the crisis.

“Above all, we wanted to express our particular gratitude to the police, emergency services and military personnel, government and local authorities, and the large number of volunteers from across the nation for their preparedness, response and ongoing recovery efforts,” the King said.
