Prince Harry faces financial strain in Montecito, California, as Sussex lifestyle comes under pressure

Mounting costs, cooling deals and a lavish lifestyle have sparked warnings Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may face a financial reset sooner than they think.

A five-year warning is hanging over Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, with insiders suggesting their current lifestyle may not be sustainable much longer.

“Five years, roughly. That’s the window before their lifestyle looks a lot different,” one source said, pointing to mounting financial pressure behind the scenes.

The warning comes as the couple continues to navigate life outside the royal system, where the costs of security, housing and legal battles now fall squarely on their shoulders.

Prince Harry and Meghan’s Montecito property, which is central to their post-royal life, carries multiple mortgages, while annual security costs are estimated to exceed $4 million. Ongoing legal disputes with British media organisations have also contributed to rising expenses, Woman’s Day reported.

“The inheritance has largely been spent on the house and the legal trials,” a source said, referring to the funds Harry received from Princess Diana and the Queen Mother.

At the same time, the commercial deals that were expected to fund their independence have not delivered as initially anticipated. Partnership with Netflix and Spotify has failed to provide the long-term financial certainty once predicted, with demand for Sussex-led content reportedly slowing.

The shift has already led to changes behind the scenes, including a reduction in staff as the couple adjust to a more constrained operating model.

Those close to Prince Harry say the adjustment has not been straightforward. Having grown up in an environment where financial concerns were largely invisible, he is now confronting the realities of managing a high-cost life independently.

“Harry … reportedly lacks basic awareness of what things cost,” one insider said.

There are also signs the couple may not be entirely aligned on what comes next.

Sources suggest Prince Harry would be open to scaling things back, even relocating and adopting a more modest lifestyle. Meghan, however, is said to be focused on maintaining momentum, with new ventures and partnerships seen as key to stabilising their position.

“Meghan has a sense of how careful they need to be,” a source said.
