A New Zealand schoolgirl has suffered “unsurvivable head injury” on a school excursion to an ice skating rink.

Kymani, 13, was rushed from Alpine Ice Sports Centre to Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition on Tuesday morning about 11am, after falling while skating, The New Zealand Herald reported.

“Sadly while on a school excursion Kymani fell, sustaining an unsurvivable head injury,” the schoolgirl’s grandmother and aunts said in a fundraising campaign created following her death.

The skating rink was closed on Tuesday.

A spokesperson said the staff’s “thoughts are with the family at this time”.

“This is a parent’s worst nightmare — sending your child to school and to never return home,” Kymani’s family said.

“Her parents, brothers, sisters and whanau are devastated.

“Kymani was a beautiful girl, only 13 years old.

“As this is an unexpected tragedy, any funds would be gratefully appreciated and will go towards preparing for what comes next.”

WorkSafe NZ is looking into the incident.
