No one else was injured in Monday night’s crash at Creech Heathfield, close to Taunton. Avon and Somerset Police said the accident, at around 11pm, involved a pedestrian and a car.

It said the girl’s next of kin had been informed and were being supported by a specially trained officer.

The force has made a mandatory referral to police watchdog the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) because of the recent prior police contact.

An IOPC spokesman said: “We were advised by Avon and Somerset Police that the girl was being transported to custody in a police vehicle and had got out of the vehicle shortly before the collision.”

Anyone who witnessed the collision or may have dashcam footage which could help the investigation is urged to contact police.
