A father has smiled and laughed in court as he confessed to killing his young son and girlfriend at his stepfather’s home.

David Huff pleaded guilty to murdering his son, Jeremiah Huff, 11, and girlfriend, Yeraldith Tschudy, 32, at the property in the New York State city of Syracuse in March last year.

The 43-year-old smirked and laughed as Judge Ted Limpert read the charges against him on Tuesday morning at Onondaga County Court, local media reported.

“You find this funny?” Judge Limpert asked him.

Mr Huff responded by blaming the chilling reaction on “a joke stuck in my head”.

Photos taken inside the court show Mr Huff dressed in beige and white prison scrubs as he stands before the judge flashing a dimpled grin.

According to New York Post, the father admitted to both killings but denied allegations he shot his son in the face.

“I’m guilty of all that,” Huff said. “Whatever you guys say, I’m guilty of.”

The conviction follows a court finding that Mr Huff was fit to stand trial after months of delays while the defence awaited an expert assessment of his mental health.

Multiple professionals in the field found any mental health incapacity was caused by voluntary abuse of drugs or alcohol, his defence lawyer, Shaun Chase, said.

Prosecutors said it was not clear whether Mr Huff was under the influence of substances on the night of the killings.

Investigators who attended the scene said Jeremiah and Ms Tschudy were murdered with a 12-gauge shotgun after Mr Huff opened fire inside his stepfather’s house on the evening of March 17, 2025.

The same weapon was used to fire shots at Mr Huff’s stepdad.

Mr Huff fled before police arrived, but he was arrested by officers the following morning.

Emergency services rushed to the grisly scene after Jeremiah’s mum, Samantha Peltier, raised the alarm following an alarming phone call she received from her son moments before the murders.

Mr Huff faces 40 years to life in prison and will be sentenced next month.
