To say there’s a lot going on in US politics right now would be a huge understatement.

Former President Donald Trump has spoken at the Republican National Conference in a speech that was exactly what Trump supporters would have been hoping to hear.

His speech, on night four of the RNC in Milwaukee, followed a shocking assassination attempt on Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.

The shooting, which killed one audience member and resulted in the death of the perpetrator, Thomas Matthew Crooks, turned the election campaign on its head.

Joe Biden had been facing increasing pressure to step down as the Democratic candidate following a miserable performance in the first presidential debate.

Those calls have continued to intensify in recent days, with former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi coming out this morning (Australian time) to say that she expects Biden can be persuaded to step down fairly soon.

Recap the highlights — and lowlights — from the RNC below.

Hogan decries the state of the US

“Crime is out of control, the border is out of control, the price of food and gas - and housing - is out of control.

“And the only person who can clean this up is Donald Trump.

“All you criminals, all you lowlifes, all you scumbags, all you drug dealers and all you crooked politicians need to answer one question.

What you gonna do when Donald Trump and all the Trump maniacs run wild on you brother?!

“God bless you!”

Hogan leaves the arena to chants of “USA!”

Trump arrives

Trump has arrived at the convention, applied the crowd and smiling warmly as he takes his seat.

The crowd is now chanting “USA! USA” over and over.

Presidential race hots up

Good morning (or good evening, depending on where in the world you are joining us from).

Welcome to The Nightly’s live coverage of the Republican National Convention, where former President Donald Trump is expected to speak in just under an hour (midday AEST).

Trump enjoyed a rousing reception when he arrived at the convention just two days ago, in what was his first public appearance after a shocking assassination attempt.

Trump appeared subdued and almost a touch emotional as he waved warmly to the crowd, sporting a bandage on his left ear.

Watch the moment he arrived in the video below.
