Bob Manar, Novi’s police commanders said officers and firefighters had attended the confronting scene after a family member “reported finding the infant injured with puncture wounds”, The Detroit News reported.
“Those wounds appear to be consistent with an animal attack.”
He did not confirm that the dog was owned by the family, but the baby’s grandmother Ellyn spoke to FOX 2 about the incident.
She said her son and the baby’s father had told her the dog “knocked the bassinet over and killed the baby before they could get to them”.
“He thinks the dog did it just to attack the baby,” Ellyn said before explaining that the dog had been around the family’s other infant children in the past, who are now toddlers.
“So we don’t know what actually happened other than the dog snapped out right in front of everyone.”
FOX 2 also reported that the dog is now in the hands of Oakland County Animal Control as police continue to investigate the incident.
The dog is reportedly of average size, and is mixed breed.
This comes after a similar incident rocked Markle, Indiana in September last year when seven-day-old baby died after it was brutally attacked by his family’s dog.
When first responders arrived on September 4 they found newborn Jason Weaver had suffered serious injuries after being bitten.
The baby was rushed to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne but tragically died from his injuries, a statement from Markle Police Department confirmed.
A forensic autopsy was carried out by Huntington County Coroner’s Office, and the boy’s cause of death was determined to be several blunt force traumatic injuries.
His death was ruled as accidental according to WPTA.
The family dog involved in the incident was identified as a five-year-old husky/pit bill cross.
The coroner’s office said the dog had “no law enforcement reported instances of aggression”.
