Police in the US are warning parents ahead of Halloween after multiple families found needles in candy that was given to their children.

Santa Fe police received multiple calls from concerned parents who found sharp sewing pins in candy given out at a homecoming parade on October 16.

Officers went to three homes and confirmed the needles were found in the lollies, but said they had also received calls from several other families.

In a statement, the Santa Fe police department urged people who attended the parade to check the candy they collected.

No injuries have been reported, but an investigation is underway with police set to release more information as it becomes available. No suspects have been identified.

According to Khou 11, local dad Jeremy Partin was the first to report the incident.

Mr Partin regularly attends the annual parade every year with his family, including two young children.

“It’s a tradition for us,” he said. “They got their bags, and they’re waving, you know, catching candy.”

But when he got home that evening, his 18-year-old daughter unwrapped a KitKat from of the the younger children’s loot bags.

Inside, she found a sewing pin shoved into the chocolate.

Mr Partin said the one the pin had been pushed into the wrapper under the flap indicated that it was intentional.

“This was no accident,” he said. “They stuck it right in. This was deliberate.”

He called police immediately and was initially told it was an isolated incident, before officers later called him back and confirmed other families had made similar discoveries.

Mr Partin said when he takes his two young children trick-or-treating this Halloween, he will take extra precautions, and replace any candy they collect with store bought stock he has purchased and inspected himself.
