Canberra pipe bombs: Man arrested after multiple explosive devices found in Belconnen

A 41-year-old man has been arrested after almost a dozen explosive devices were discovered along footpaths in Canberra’s northwest.
Multiple pipe bombs had been located since Tuesday near Lake Ginninderra between Joynton Smith Drive and Ginninderra Drive in Belconnen.
By Thursday, 11 silver, tube-shaped objects with screw tops had been recovered along a one-kilometre stretch of footpath in a popular parkland area frequented by runners and dog walkers.

Police further allege the man stole and purchased materials used to make the devices from a store in Belconnen.
The man was not at home at the time; however, he was later arrested at a unit in Gungahlin around 10.30pm.
He has been charged with the unauthorised manufacturing of prohibited dangerous substances, possessing a prohibited weapon and theft.
The man will face the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday, January 19.
Investigations remain ongoing and further charges are expected to be laid, an ACT Police spokesperson said.
Police do not believe the incident to be terrorism related and no one has been injured.
