‘We are going to come back very strongly’

“Jobs in factories will come roaring back into our country and you see it happening already,” Mr Trump said.

“We will supercharge our domestic industrial base, we will open foreign markets and break down foreign trade barriers and, ultimately, more production at home will mean strong competition and lower prices for consumers.

“This will be, indeed, the golden age of Americans coming back.

“We are going to come back very strongly.”

‘Declaration of economic independence’

“This is one of the moss important days, in my opinion, in American history,” Mr Trump said.

“It is our declaration of economic independence.

“For years, hard working American citizens were forced to sit on the sidelines as other nations get rich and powerful, much at our expense but now it is our time to prosper and in so doing use trillions and trillions of dollars to reduce our taxes and paydown our national bent.

“It will all happen very quickly. We are going to make America great again.

“Greater than ever before.”

“That means they do it to us and we do it to them.

“Very simple.

“Can’t get any simpler than that.”

‘We have some very good news today’

“My fellow Americans, this is Liberation Day!” Mr Trump said as he spoke from the White House.

“April 2nd, 2025 will forever be remembered as the day American industry was rebon, the day thatAmerica’s destiny was reclaimed andthe day that we began to makeAmerica wealthy again.”

“For decades, our country has been looted, pill aged, raped and plundered by nations near and far, friend and foe alike.

“Men, steelworkers, autoworkers, farmers and skilled craftsmen, we have a lot of them here with us today.

“They have suffered gravely and watched inarrange win as foreign leaders have stolen our jobs.”

Beer and aluminium cans to be hit with tariffs

The Trump administration is adding imports of beer and empty aluminum cans to its 25 per cent tariffs on derivative aluminum products, according to a notice posted Wednesday in the Federal Register.

The notice from the Commerce Department said the adjusted tariffs would take effect after midnight Friday.

One of the two product tariff codes referenced in the notice applies to “beer made from malt.” The other applies to aluminum casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers with a capacity no greater than 20 liters.

The notice does not include a separate code that would encompass beer in glass containers.

Before Trump makes his announcement, what is a tariff?

As US President Donald Trump prepares to announce his new tariffs, some may still be left asking: “What is a tariff?”

Tariffs are taxes on goods imported from other countries. They are usually a percentage of the product’s value.

Companies that bring the goods into the country pay the tax to the Government and often they then choose to pass that additional cost onto consumers.

White House issues first article on ‘Liberation Day’ tariffs

The White House has issued an article ahead of US President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariff announcment, claiming the United States will soon be back on a “level playing field”.

“For the first time in decades, the United States will see fair trade as President Donald J. Trump announces tariffs to level the playing field for American workers and businesses,” the article said.

“Despite the rhetoric from politicians and the media, studies have repeatedly shown tariffs are an effective tool for achieving economic and strategic objectives — just as they did in President Trump’s first term.”
