The pilot involved in a tragic accident at the Avalon Australian International Airshow has been identified as he remains in hospital fighting for his life.

Glenn Collins, a seasoned and highly regarded pilot, was flying as part of the SkyAces Formation Aerobatic Team when he crashed at speed after failing to pull up during a stunt display.

In a statement, Paul Bennet Airshows, the group behind the display, expressed their concern and well wishes for Mr Collins.

“There was an accident yesterday involving one of our long-time Sky Aces pilots during the aerobatic display at the Avalon Australian International Airshow,” the statement said.

“The Bennet family and the Paul Bennet Airshows team are thinking of Glenn Collins, who remains in hospital, and his family at this time.

“We would like to acknowledge the extraordinary level of support from medical staff as well as messages of support received from here and around the world.”

Paul Bennet Airshows confirmed they would not be performing in the airshow for the remainder of the event.

Mr Collins, a pilot with Paul Bennet Airshows, has clocked up over 2700 hours in multiple aircraft.

“Glenn has flown competition Aerobatics to Advanced level, including becoming NSW and Australian Sportsman champion in 1997, Australian Intermediate champion in 1998 and Victorian Advanced champion in 1999,” his bio reads.

The crash, which occurred at around 5.15pm on Friday, was witnessed by hundreds of spectators who went silent as they realised what happened.

“Ladies and gentlemen, can you please ensure that your phones are turned away and if you have any children, can you please make your way to the back of the taxi-way,” an announcer said.

“We have a confirmed emergency, there is definitely a situation at the moment.”

One witnesses described the incident to 7NEWS as a “very sobering” and “sombre” moment that stunned the crowd of thousands.

Another said: “It just went silent, totally silent. There wasn’t a sound from anybody.”
