Justin Stein: Notorious child murderer unmasked as paedophile
A notorious child killer who shot his fiancee’s nine-year-old daughter and dumped her body in a barrel has admitted to a separate crime.
One of NSW’s most notorious murderers can now be unmasked as a paedophile after Justin Stein pleaded guilty to possessing child abuse material.
Stein, 35 is already serving a life sentence for shooting his fiancee’s daughter Charlise Mutten at point blank range before placing her body in a barrel and dumping it down a river.
Stein was due to face trial in the Penrith District Court on Monday having pleaded not guilty to child abuse material and gun offences.

It is not alleged the material related to Charlise.
He will also be sentenced for a slew of other offences -– one count of aggravated break and enter, one count of possessing ammunition without a licence, two counts of possessing an unregistered firearm and two counts of possessing an unauthorised firearm – when he faces court later this year.
Stein killed Charlise at his family’s Mount Wilson property at some point on January 11, 2022, or early the next day, before he wrapped her body and dumped it in a barrel near the Colo River.
Charlise was shot in the hip as she turned to escape before Stein shot the helpless nine-year-old in the face from point-blank range.
Stein denied killing Charlise and stood trial in the NSW Supreme Court in 2024 before he was found guilty by a jury.
At the time Charlise was killed, her mother, Kallista Mutten, was staying inside Stein’s caravan at Lower Portland, while Stein and Charlise were staying at his parents’ property in the Blue Mountains.
After killing Charlise, Stein picked up Ms Mutten and drove to Sydney, where they did drugs and had sex in Centennial Park, before returning to Mount Wilson at 8.44pm to find the house empty.
He also sent messages to Ms Mutten and his mother pretending he was looking for Charlise but he was instead driving around Sydney searching for places to dump her body, which was on the back of his ute.
He was arrested a week after the killing and 11 months later was charged with the further firearm and child abuse material offences.
Stein will face sentencing proceedings on September 11.
