A Toyota Prado carrying 11 people crashed on Mardiyardu Rd, between Kalkarindji and Lajamanu in the state’s north, just before 11am on Sunday.

An eight-year-old child was declared dead not long after.

Ten other people, including a 29-year-old woman who was allegedly driving, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Detective Senior Sergeant Richard Musgrave said alcohol was allegedly involved in the accident.

“Communications from the scene was limited due to the remote location of the crash and Major Crash Investigators are currently on-site at both scenes,” he said on Monday.

“This is a complex crash involving alcohol and a large number of unrestrained passengers that has tragically resulted in the death of a young child.”

“Local police are providing support to the families and local communities affected.”

Police are continuing to investigate the crash.

Musgrave urged anyone with information to contact police.
