Man fighting for life after being attacked by shark at northern NSW beach
A young surfer is fighting for life after being bitten by a shark in northern NSW, prompting closures of several beaches in the area.
About 11am on Tuesday, emergency services were called to North Shore Beach in Port Macquarie after the man was attacked.
The man, aged 23, was treated at the scene for leg injuries. He was taken to Port Macquarie Hospital in a critical but stable condition.

NSW Ambulance Service Hastings South duty manager Kirran Mowbray said a retired police officer, who was on the beach and walking his dog, rushed to the surfer’s aid.
“He used the lead from the dog as a tourniquet to wrap around the young man’s leg and essentially saved his life until the paramedics got there,” she told reporters on Tuesday afternoon.
Mowbray said the young man, a Port Macquarie local, had been out for a surf, and was able to catch a wave into shore after being bitten by the shark.
Multiple ambulance crews and a rescue helicopter were deployed after the attack.
“Emergency services are on scene at North Shore Beach, after a reported shark attack,” NSW Police earlier said.
Beaches between North Shore and Lighthouse Beach (Tacking Point) are closed and will remain closed for at least 24 hours.
Port Macquarie Hastings ALS Lifeguards said members of the public and a fellow surfer helped the man by using makeshift tourniquets.
North Shore Beach is somewhat isolated and can be accessed by ferry from Port Macquarie CBD.
