Police say a stolen white ute crashed into three cars waiting at a red light.

The driver of the ute jumped out and tried to run away but was quickly intercepted by the drivers of the three cars, who held him by the side of the road until police arrived.

He was taken into custody but then became unresponsive.

The man, who has not yet been identified, was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

Residents in the area told 7NEWS the sound of the impact woke them up.

“The whole house just shook, like there had been an impact, almost like something had run into the house,” they said.

“It was quite loud.”

Another man who witnessed the crash said he “witnessed the driver flailing his arms around to avoid being grabbed”.

His cause of death is still unclear.

No other injuries were recorded.

Craigieburn Rd is closed in both directions between Aitken Blvd and Waterview Blvd.

Drivers have been urged to use Donnybrook Rd to the north or Somerton Rd to the south.

Buses on Route 528 are diverting around the road closure and missing two stops in each direction.

“This closure is under the control of Victoria Police and the road will re-open only when investigations are complete and it’s safe to do so,” the transport department said.
