A home has gone up in flames after a suspicious fire started in Melbourne’s northwest while two young children were asleep inside.

The blaze broke out on Orbis Ave in Fraser Rise just before 2am on Friday, engulfing a two-storey house, a car parked in the driveway and a second vehicle in the street.

There were two adults and two primary-school aged children asleep in the home at the time and they were evacuated to the back yard.

Fire crews had to wear breathing apparatuses to attack the fire internally and prevent it from spreading to neighbouring properties.

It was brought under control after about 45 minutes.

A crime scene has been established and Victoria Police confirmed the fire is being treated as suspicious.

No one was seriously injured, but paramedics did attend to assess the occupants.

An arson chemist will go to the scene later on Friday and anyone with information is urged to contact police.
