A woman has been sexually assaulted by a stranger on a crowded Melbourne bus following a university open day.

The woman was travelling from Monash University to Clayton Railway Station on the 733 bus just before 4pm on August 4 when she was set upon.

Due to the busy crowd, the woman was unable to move away from the man, who was sitting in the rear seat, and became visibly upset before witnesses intervened and helped her, police said.

Police said the man was believed to have also engaged in sexually inappropriate conversations with other passengers.

After stepping off the bus, he then approached a teenager and made sexually inappropriate remarks.

“Witnesses have again stepped in and helped the victim who was left shaken and visibly upset,” police said.

Detectives are investigating and have identified a person of interest, who is currently in a correctional facility concerning other matters.

Police are appealing for any commuters who may have been on the bus or near the railway station at the time to come forward.

“The bus was crowded, after leaving the university with an influx of passengers following an open day, as such there were several people in close proximity to the incidents,” police said.
