The woman “is known to the girl,” police have said.

QLD Police and emergency services were called to a home at Emerald Lakes, Carrara, just after 6pm on Tuesday where they found the 10-year-old girl unresponsive.

Inspector Lou Serafim told reporters at the scene emergency services were alerted to the “traumatic” incident by a relative of the girl.

“At approximately six o’clock this evening police received a triple-0 emergency call about a 10-year-old girl who was located deceased in a unit,” she said.

“At this point, we are treating the death of the 10-year-old girl as suspicious, and investigations are currently underway about the demise of the girl.

“The triple-0 call was made by a relative who was at the incident scene when they located the 10-year-old girl. He is being very cooperative and is assisting police with the investigation.”

Police said the girl lived at the property where she was found, but have not confirmed how the 10-year-old died. Authorities were called after the girl was discovered with a slashed throat, according to The Courier Mail.

Insp Serafim said the staff who attended as first responders and emergency services from the Queensland Ambulance Service entered a scene that “was quite traumatic”.

“These officers and the paramedics are receiving internal counselling about the incident that they were exposed to,” she said.

The street has been cordoned off as police and forensics officers investigate the circumstances surrounding the girl’s death.

A resident said the neighbourhood was “normally very quiet” and was shocked by the devastating news.

“I can’t believe it,” she told The Courier-Mail.
