Police are searching for answers after a man and woman were found dead onboard a luxury yacht on Sydney's Lower North Shore.

Boatie Peter Ray and brothel owner Lixen Wang have been named as the man and woman found dead on a luxury yacht moored in Sydney’s north on Wednesday.

The pair, both aged in their 60s, were found about 9pm on a bed inside the 47ft vessel, named Taloha, which was moored off Tunks Park in Cammeray.

Ray, who owned the yacht, and Wang had arrived at the marina in separate cars, which were towed from the carpark on Thursday. Their relationship is unclear at this stage.

“The information provided to us was that they left on the vessel on Monday,” Marine Area command detective inspector Siobhan Munro said.

But residents told 7NEWS they saw lights on inside the cabin and heard a generator running on board for days.

A friend reported the concern for welfare that led police to board the vessel, 7NEWS understands.

“When police boarded the vessel, they thought they may have smelt some type of gas or a fume,” Munro said.

7NEWS understands gas cylinders were among some of the items seized from the boat for forensic examination

Whether a carbon monoxide leak was the cause of the deaths will form part of the investigation but, for now, the deaths are being treated as suspicious.

Local boatie Nathaniel Murphy told 7NEWS: “I spoke with one of the guys from the marina (who) said they were a new client who’d been travelling in the boat and had only been here for two to three weeks.

“I’ve been around the marine industry for a long time and I’ve seen a lot of people pass away.

“Carbon monoxide alarms should be installed on every single boat.”

A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the causes of death, as investigations continue.

Anyone who has any information has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
