A 10-year-old girl has allegedly been stabbed to death by her sister in a horrific incident in New South Wales.

Police and emergency services were called to an address on Thurston Street in Boolaroo, 20km west of Newcastle, at 3.45pm today.

Paramedics treated the 10-year-old girl for multiple stab wounds at the scene but she tragically died from her injuries.

Officers from Lake Macquarie police district arrested a 17-year-old girl at the property, who is currently assisting police with their inquiries at Belmont police station.

A police spokeswoman said the victim is known to the teenager. It is understood she is the sister of the 10-year-old.

“A crime scene has been established as investigations continue,” they said.

Neighbours have been left devastated by the tragic incident.

“It is just beyond words,” a neighbour, who did not want to be identified, told the Sydney Morning Herald.

“We are grieving.”
