Experienced police officers have been left shocked and enraged after a senseless act of animal cruelty left 29 chickens dead at an education facility in NSW.

Police have commenced an investigation regarding the act of animal cruelty in the state’s Illawarra region.

At about 9.30am on Sunday officers from Wollongong police district responded to a report that 29 chickens had been killed in the grounds of an education facility on Pioneer Road at Corrimal.

Officers had been informed that the chickens were secured in a large pen enclosure on the grounds and were owned by the institution.

The incident is believed to have occurred sometime between 2pm on Friday December 20 and 9.30am on Sunday.

Inspector Allison Guthrie from Wollongong police district said the incident was deeply disturbing.

“These animals have been subjected to horrific acts of cruelty,” Inspector Guthrie said.

“It is clear this was not the act of a fox or a feral cat – these chickens were well cared for by the facility and for someone to do this is beyond belief.”

“We are urging anyone who may have any information about this matter – or who were in the area at the time with any available dashcam/mobile phone footage – to contact Wollongong police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
