Details emerge after woman’s body found in Belmore, Sydney

A homicide investigation is underway in southwestern Sydney after a woman died in what police believe may have been a domestic violence-related incident.

The woman’s body was found at a home on Knox St, Belmore, following a welfare call to police about 7.50am on Wednesday.

She is yet to be formally identified, but is believed to be in her 30s.

Superintendent Sheridan Waldau said a 35-year-old man was arrested at a home in Denham Court.

“We expect that he will be charged with murder later on this afternoon,” she told reporters on Wednesday.

“It is very early in the investigation ... we only attended the scene at 8am this morning, and there are now two crime scenes.

“So we expect we will have more information later on.”

Waldau added the woman had an AVO in place against a man, which was set to expire in February 2025.

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb said it was too early to speculate on motive, but domestic violence had not been ruled out.

She used the opportunity to lament the 73 known and alleged domestic violence deaths of Australian women in 2024.

“It’s something that keeps me awake at night, frankly — that women are not always safe,” she said.

“Victims of domestic violence are not always safe.”

A crime scene has been established.

The 35-year-old man remains in custody at Campbelltown Police Station, where he is assisting police.

The investigation is ongoing.
