Kiama: Rescuers unable to revive 55-year-old man after he was caught in a rip on NSW South Coast beach

Members of the public raced to assist but were unable to revive a man who lost his life after being caught in a rip on the NSW south coast.

Shortly before 5pm on Thursday, emergency services responded to reports that members of the public were performing CPR on a man who had been removed from the surf at South Bombo Beach, near Kiama.

Officers from Lake Illawarra police district also assisted in CPR efforts until the arrival of NSW Ambulance paramedics, however the 52-year-old man could not be revived, and he died at the scene.

Police have been informed that the man was swimming in the surf with an 18-year-old male relative when they became caught in a rip.

Several members of the public entered the surf and removed the pair from the water.

The 18-year-old man was uninjured.

A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.
