The identity of a police officer who allegedly solicited child abuse material and shared it on social media has been revealed after a court dismissed his bid to conceal his name.

Constable Laurence Javan Alleman was arrested earlier this month after a joint investigation by NSW Police and Australian Federal Police into online child abuse material.

Police allege the 26-year-old possessed and solicited child abuse material using a carriage service.

The constable is also accused of uploading the child sex material to a social media platform.

Investigators conducted a search warrant on a house at Clemton Park, in Sydney’s southwest, on October 2 and seized a number of electronic devices before arresting Mr Alleman.

When he faced Bankstown Local Court the next day, magistrate George Breton made an interim suppression order preventing reporters from identifying the police officer.

Mr Alleman’s lawyer argued the order was necessary to protect his client in custody.

But after time considering submissions further, the magistrate on Friday ruled the police officer’s safety concerns were “pure conjecture”.

“There has been no suggestion of harm against the defendant since his arrest,” Mr Breton said.

“It’s a rationally formed fear, but one that may never be borne out.”

He revoked the order, noting submissions from a media lawyer who argued the public interest in open justice was best served by accurate reporting on court proceedings.

Mr Alleman will remain behind bars on remand until he returns to court next month.

He is suspended without pay from the NSW Police Force and his employment status is under review.
