Monster magic mushroom haul and bags of cash seized in police raids across Sydney

Bags of money and an apartment full of magic mushrooms have been seized after NSW police launched raids and declared it the biggest haul of the illegal drug in a similar premises ever.

Organised crime squad detectives have executed seven search warrants and charged four people following an investigation into a criminal syndicate manufacturing and supplying magic mushrooms and other prohibited drugs across Sydney.

Strike Force Fanon was established by the state crime command’s organised crime squad in May 2024 to investigate the alleged drug supply activities of four people.

At about 8.50am on Tuesday, strike force detectives – with assistance from raptor squad traffic and highway patrol officers – stopped a vehicle in Sydney Olympic Park where they arrested two men, aged 45 and 30.

The men were taken to Auburn police station, where the older man was charged with 10 offences relating to the supply of large commercial quantities of drugs.

The younger man was charged with four offences relating to the supply of large commercial quantities of drugs.

At 9.30am, strike force detective arrested a 28-year-old man at a café in West Ryde. He was taken to Gladesville police station where he was charged with supply prohibited drug, indictable, and commercial quantity.

All three men were refused bail to appear in Burwood Local Court on Wednesday.

Soon after, strike force detectives – with assistance from Sydney city police area command – executed a search warrant in Pyrmont where they discovered a clandestine laboratory producing psilocybin, also known as magic mushrooms.

Assistance was sought from drug and firearms squad chemical operations unit, technical and forensic support unit, and NSW fire & rescue HAZMAT teams to dismantle the lab.

The laboratory is the largest magic mushroom lab found by NSW Police in a residential apartment.

At the scene, police arrested a 45-year-old woman who was taken to Day Street police station where she was charged with five offences relating to the supply of large commercial quantities of drugs.

The woman was refused bail to appear in Downing Centre Local Court today.

During the operation, search warrants were executed at Oatlands, Campsie, Epping, Rydalmere, West Ryde and Pyrmont, where police seized a large amount of prohibited drugs including 100 bags of magic mushrooms.

Police will allege in court the group were responsible for the large-scale supply of a range of drugs including magic mushrooms, cocaine and methylamphetamine.
