A man has suffered serious head and spinal injuries when he fell trying to climb down the side of a building in Wollongong, NSW.

The 50-year-old man was allegedly trying to climb down the outside of the building in Bligh St after police officers knocked on the door of a third-floor unit about 7.30am on Wednesday as part of an ongoing investigation.

The man fell to the ground and was treated at the scene for facial, head and spinal injuries before being taken to Wollongong Hospital.

The man has since been airlifted to St George Hospital in a serious condition.

NSW Police will investigate what happened, declaring it a critical incident.

“The incident is also subject to an independent review,” police said.
