NSW Ambulance paramedics attempted to resuscitate him before he was taken to Prince of Wales Children’s Hospital.

“We could hear a lot of screaming... apparently the little boy fell into the pool,” a neighbour told 7NEWS.

“They were still trying to resuscitate him as they were taking him out.”

NSW Police initially reported the boy had died, however, this is incorrect. He remains in hospital in a critical condition.

“Police attached to Liverpool City Police Area Command attended and established a crime scene and commenced inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident,” a NSW Police spokesperson said.

Detectives say the family was holding a gathering when the accident happened.

The latest National Drowning Report revealed 323 people died in Australian pools and waterways last year including 29 children under the age of 14.

The incident is not being treated as suspicious.
