A 67-year-old driver allegedly drove at police officers before crashing a ute into Mudgee Police Station in New South Wales' Central West.

A ute allegedly driven at police officers before crashing into the front of a regional police station has left a NSW community shaken, with a 67-year-old man now facing a string of serious charges.

Police allege the dramatic sequence unfolded in Mudgee, in the state’s central west, on Friday afternoon.

About 1.30pm, officers attached to Orana Mid Western Police District were conducting foot patrols along Market Street when a utility allegedly drove towards several police officers.

According to police, officers attempted to stop the driver, but he allegedly failed to comply with directions and left the scene.

The incident allegedly escalated a short time later outside Mudgee Police Station.

Police claim the same driver then drove the ute at another officer who was exiting the station before crashing into the building’s front foyer.

The alleged impact sparked an immediate emergency response, with a crime scene established at the station as investigators worked to piece together the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Despite the frightening allegations and damage to the police facility, authorities said no injuries were reported.

The man was arrested at the scene and transported to Dubbo Police Station, where he was charged with multiple offences.

The charges include destroying or damaging property with intent to endanger life, two counts of using an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence, failing to stop during a police pursuit and driving dangerously, driving recklessly or in a dangerous manner, and a subsequent offence of possessing a knife in a public place.

The accused was refused bail and was due to appear before Bail Division Court 4 on Saturday.

Police have not released further details about the alleged motive behind the incident or whether the officers involved were specifically targeted.

Contingency arrangements are now being put in place as authorities assess the damage to Mudgee Police Station and ensure services remain available to the local community.

While the station building has been impacted, police said residents can continue contacting Mudgee officers through Orana Mid Western Police District.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
