The crew member was rescued on Friday afternoon and taken to John Hunter Hospital, where they are being monitored by medical staff under the surveillance of the Australian Border Force.

The ship was about 8km south-east of Newcastle.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority coordinated the search.

“AMSA ... has tasked the Newcastle-based NSW Water Police and Marine Rescue NSW units, along with the Port Stephens-based Water Police vessel, to assist,” an AMSA spokesperson said on Friday.

Two helicopters — the Westpac Rescue helicopter from Williamtown and a Defence helicopter from Belmont near Newcastle — also assisted in the search.
