A fatal shooting in inner Sydney was a “targeted attack” on a man who police say had links to organised crime.

The shocking incident began when emergency services were called to the scene at 7.45pm on Baptist Street, near Cleveland Street in Surry Hills after members of the public reported a gun had been fired.

A man in his 30s had been shot while sitting his car at a nearby service station.

The critically injured man managed to get out of his car and make his way down the street before paramedics arrived.

They tried desperately to save him but he died at the scene.

Shortly after the shooting, police discovered a burning Porsche in the Kensington area and they say the two crimes are linked.

South Sydney police area command Supt. Andrew Garner labelled the shooting “outrageous”, confirming the man was known to police and had links to organised crime.

“The male that died had known links to organised crime,” he said.

“We believe it was targeted, and that he was the intended target of that attack, and there’s no broader risk or threat to the public in relation to this.”

Supt. Garner lashed out at the perpetrators of the shooting, saying it had put members of the public at risk.

“This was an outrageous incident, demonstrated a high level of reckless indifference to the public in and around that area at the time and we’ve been working very hard to identify and arrest those involved and hold them to account,” he said.

Supt. Garner also issued a warning for those involved in the shooting, saying: “We’re coming for you.”

Anyone with information about the incident should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
