A packed Sydney Metro train with hundreds of people on board became stuck deep inside a tunnel as officials implemented a rescue plan to avoid making the passengers walk out.

The train was trapped in the tunnel between Chatswood and Macquarie Park after a lightning strike disabled crucial electricals, with Sydney Trains technicians walking in to attempt to fix the problem.

Howard Collins, Coordinator-General for Sydney Trains, said the situation was going to take time to resolve as they worked on the solution.

“One train is stuck in the tunnel with people, including school children on board, and it is unable to move after a lightning strike,” Collins told 2GB

“A technician is en-route but he will have to walk in.

“If the train can’t be moved we may have to send in another train as close as we can or in the worst case the people may have to walk out.”

People on board were advised by a Sydney Metro staff member who was in communication with officials as the train still had some power.

The train’s ventilation was not affected, power was restored to the carriages late into the afternoon peak, and the train was able to move the horde of frustrated commuters on to the nearest station.

Services at Ryde, Chatswood, Crows Nest and Victoria Cross Stations continue to be affected by the burst of bad weather and commuters are likely to be left waiting for hours to make their peak hour journey home.

“There’s a lot of rain throughout Sydney which could lead to hazardous conditions throughout the night,” Collins added.
