Wollongong: Tragedy strikes as fisherman drowns after being swept off rocks and can not be revived

Tragedy has struck at the start of the Easter long weekend when a fisherman drowned after being swept off rocks and could not be revived.

Inquiries are under way after police reported the fisherman died after being swept into the water in Wollongong on Friday morning.

Just after 6.15am, emergency services were called to Endeavour Drive at the Wollongong Harbour, following calls stating a man had pulled from the water unconscious.

Emergency services attended the location and attempted to assist the 58-year-old man, however he could not be revived and died was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police believe the man was fishing on a rock wall nearby when he was swept into the water and are urging any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police to come forward.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner and witnesses can contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000.
