Pacific Highway chaos: Woman sustains serious injuries after crashed car was then hit by a truck

Chaotic scenes played out on the Pacific Highway as a car involved in an accident was then hit by a truck, severely injuring a woman who remained in the back seat.

Police reported three people had been travelling south in an SUV towing a trailer on the Pacific Highway near Coopernook at around 8:30pm on Thursday when it struck a guard rail.

The SUV the spun around on impact and ended up facing north.

The driver and front-seat passenger had left the SUV when it was struck by a southbound truck, seriously injuring a woman who was still in the back seat.

The truck then left the road and continued down an embankment.

The SUV passenger was treated at the scene for multiple injuries before being taken to Taree Base Hospital. She has since been airlifted to another hospital for further treatment.

Three people travelling in the truck – the male driver, his female partner and their child, all from Granville – were taken to Port Macquarie Hospital to be checked as a precaution. He will also undergo mandatory testing.

The driver of the SUV and his front-seat passenger escaped injury. He has been taken to Taree Base Hospital for mandatory testing.

The Pacific Highway southbound was closed for more than two hours while the scene was examined and the wreckage removed.

Inquiries are continuing.
