Waylen’s son remains under police guard in hospital after he was found with self-inflicted wounds 2km away.

“We’re very keen to speak to the 55-year-old in the hope that he can provide some clarity to us,” Thomas said.

One local told 7NEWS Waylen’s death was a “shock” to the close-knit coastal town.

“It’s a real community area, anything like this sort of shakes the area up,” tradesman Shaun Rogan said.

Detective Inspector Dean Thomas said police were still awaiting post-mortem results to determine Waylen’s cause of death.

“That will obviously help us piece together what’s gone on,” he said.

Anyone with information has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
