Footscray shooting: Man killed after charging police with knife in bust Melbourne street

Police have shot and killed man who was wielding a knife in a busy Melbourne CBD street.

The man died after police confirmed he was shot by officers in Footscray on Thursday night.

Emergency services responded to calls at Albert Street after reports a man was wandering the streets armed with a knife at about 9pm.

Two police officers who arrived at the scene discovered the man and instructed him to drop the weapon.

The man then charged towards the police, still armed with the knife, and was shot by both officers.

The offender who is yet to be formally identified, was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

Homicide Squad detectives have begun an investigation with oversight from Professional Standards Command, which is standard procedure for a fatal police shooting.
