An 18-year-old driver has “miraculously” escaped a crash in which the entire back half of his car was ripped off and flung into a nearby yard in northwest Sydney on Tuesday evening.

The alleged drink-driver was near the intersection of Old Northern Rd and Hill St in Baulkham Hills when he crashed with another car about 7.15pm.

The 2004 Mazda was “completely cut in half,” NSW Police said.

The back half of the car was found down the side of a nearby house, where it had smashed through the side gate of the property.

The 45-year-old driver of the other car involved in the crash was hospitalised as a precaution.

The teen driver was breath tested at the scene and allegedly returned a positive result.

He was arrested and taken to Castle Hill Police Station, where police confirmed a blood alcohol reading of 0.110.

“While the cause of this particular incident is still under investigation — alcohol and speed appear to be the main factors,” NSW Police said.

“His licence was immediately suspended, and he was charged with mid-range drink driving.”

The 18-year-old will appear in Parramatta Local Court on December 11, 2024.

Police warned the outcome could have been devastatingly different.

“It’s important to remember that drink-driving and speeding are leading causes of road accidents and fatalities,” police said.

“The Hills Highway Patrol is committed to reducing these incidents through rigorous enforcement and community education. Remember, your choices on the road can have life-altering consequences.

“Stay safe and drive responsibly.”
