Two people have been charged over a shooting targeting the wrong funeral site of a slain Sydney gangster over the weekend.

Shots were fired from an unknown SUV just after 2.20pm on Saturday at Diamond Venues in Punchbowl, where the wake for Lorenzo Lemalu, 24, was due to be held. Lemalu was gunned down in Vietnam last month and was believed to have been a senior figure in Sydney’s underworld crime crew the Coconut Cartel.

His funeral was advertised to be held at the Punchbowl venue before being moved to Lakemba Mosque on Sunday. Riot police, specialist officers and aerial surveillance monitored the funeral for signs further gangland violence.

A 17-year-old boy and a 23-year-old man were charged with firing a weapon and participating in organised criminal activity. Both were refused bail to face court on Tuesday.

Video of the shooting was shared online by SCN WorldStar, capturing more than two dozen shots being fired at the second level of the building.

“Yeah, yeah this window right here cuz,” a male voice can allegedly be heard saying before the rear passenger of the vehicle is seen opening fire.

“Keep going cuz, keep going.

“Aye done? Aye lets f--king go lad.”

Police say no injuries were reported and the vehicle was found engulfed in flames a short time later.

Lemalu was shot dead outside a seafood restaurant in Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City on May 21.

Two Samoan nationals have been charged in connection with his death in the Southeast Asian country, with police alleging they were acting “under the direction of an individual abroad”.

The Punchbowl shooting reignited tensions in Sydney’s gangland war, as the Coconut Cartel are often involved in tit-for-tat shootings with the Alameddine crime family.
