Police have charged a man after they rescued a tiny sausage dog from a hot car on the Gold Coast over the weekend.

A member of the public called officers just after 2.30pm when they spotted a miniature dachshund called Duppy in the back of a Volkswagen Jetta for at least an hour on Marine Parade in Coolangatta.

The car was sitting in the sun on a 27C day with high humidity.

The car windows were only open a small amount and the dog had not been left with any water. An uncapped syringe was also allegedly found in the car.

Coolangatta Police officers forced their way into the car to rescue the dog and while they were giving it water, the alleged driver returned to the vehicle.

A 38-year-old Tweed Heads man, who was looking after Duppy for his owner, was charged with failing to take reasonable care and precautions in respect of syringe or needle.

Police returned the dog to its owner and say the investigation is till ongoing.

The 38-year-old is expected to appear in Coolangatta Magistrates Court on January 20.

Queensland Police issued a fresh warning for motorists about leaving pets inside cars, saying the internal temperature of a car can quickly double the external temperature and cause significant health problems for anyone — animal or human — left inside.
